Since I often get asked how I create my cartoons, here’s a brief step by step. This is not a tutorial on how to ink and colour cartoons, just a quick selection of images from the initial sketch to the finished cartoon. If you are looking for specific cartooning tutorials, there are many out there on the net, plus hundreds of books that have been written by cartoonists who are much more skilled and experienced than I am at this sort of thing. I would highly recommend checking out Tom Richmond’s great tutorials on his blog for a start.

This first image starts with a sketch. If it’s done on paper, I scan it in to Photoshop and then reduce the opacity of the layer, so I can ‘ink’ it on the layer above. After that’s finished the underlying sketch is rendered invisible.
Once the ink is done, I fill in the colour on either one or multiple underlying layers. Once I have the flat colour filled in, I put in the lights and darks to add depth.
Finally, the text and background is added for the finished editorial cartoon.
